Electrostatic flocking is a special processing technology that vertically implants short fibers into an adhesive coating through high-voltage electrostatics, forming a three-dimensional velvet effect. In this process, the performance of the adhesive is crucial. Water-based polyurethane flocking adhesive, with its excellent comprehensive performance, has become the preferred adhesive material in the current flocking industry, especially in the fields of high-end textiles, home furnishings, and decorative materials.
Step One: Precise Coating
Select the appropriate type of water-based polyurethane flocking adhesive according to the substrate (fabric, plastic, etc.) and the final application (e.g., clothing requires soft and breathable texture, hard materials require strong adhesion). Using precision roller coating or a scraper, a uniform and controllable adhesive layer is formed on the substrate surface. The key in this step is to accurately control the coating amount and viscosity to ensure the fibers adhere sufficiently without overcoating, which could affect the feel and drying efficiency.
Step Two: Electrostatic Flocking
The coated substrate enters a high-voltage electrostatic field. Under tens of thousands of volts of DC voltage, the fibers are accelerated vertically and densely and firmly embedded into the uncured adhesive layer. The stability of the electrostatic generator and the field strength are pivotal in determining the flocking density and uprightness. When using water-based polyurethane adhesive, its excellent dielectric properties help distribute the electric field, enhancing flocking uniformity.
Step Three: Heat Curing and Shaping
The flocked product enters an oven for stepwise drying and curing. Water-based polyurethane adhesive usually undergoes two stages: pre-drying (to remove water) and baking (cross-linking and curing). An optimized hot-air circulation process can fully cross-link the adhesive at suitable temperatures, achieving a firm three-dimensional integration of fibers, adhesive, and substrate while preserving the original characteristics of the substrate.
Step Four: Post-finishing and Cleaning
After curing, floating fibers are removed through brushing and vacuuming, resulting in the preliminary finished product. Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties of the water-based polyurethane film, the flocked surface can further undergo embossing, printing, brushing, and other high-end post-processing, creating diversified, high-value products such as suede-like or printed flocked materials.
Applications of water-based polyurethane flocking adhesive are continually expanding:
Fashion and Home Furnishings: Used in sofa fabrics, curtains, carpets, wall coverings, and luggage leather for comfortable touch and aesthetic design.
Automotive Interiors: Produces velvet materials for dashboards, door panels, etc., enhancing luxury and sound absorption.
Arts and Crafts & Packaging: Adds tactile quality to gift boxes and display interiors.
Functional Materials: Develops specialty fabrics with specific tactile, optical, or wear-resistant requirements.
The electrostatic flocking process centered on water-based polyurethane adhesive perfectly integrates environmental requirements with high-performance standards. It not only drives the flocking industry toward clean production but also provides products with excellent durability, rich tactile feel, and diverse styles, creating significant market value for downstream brands. Choosing high-quality water-based polyurethane flocking adhesive is a key step in enhancing product competitiveness and capturing the high-end market.
